The Difference Between the Dark and Light Feminine

First, let’s just clear: What is feminine energy versus masculine energy?

Disclaimer: feminine and masculine energies have nothing to do with gender, and both are present within all gender identifications.

Feminine yin/receptive energy is:

  • Subconscious

  • Creativity

  • Non-linear

  • Collaboration

  • Experiencing

Masculine yang/penetrative energy is:

  • Thinking

  • Logic

  • Conscious

  • Controlled Structure

  • Linear

  • Competition

  • Achieving

  • Giving

  • Survival

Now that we're clear on the qualities of The feminine, what is the difference between light feminine and dark feminine energy?

To be clear: dark is not BAD and light is not GOOD. Check out this video for more on that!

Instead, we consider the light feminine to be feminine energy that is embraced and accepted, whereas the dark feminine is that which has been stigmatized and repressed.


If we want to live fully in our feminine power, we must embody both the light AND the dark!

Some examples of the light, accepted feminine are:

  • External Beauty

  • Sensual Purity

  • Love and Light

  • Grace and Patience

  • Soft and Delicate

  • Nurturing and Cooperative

  • Peace and Play

  • The Innocent Maiden

Some examples of the dark, stigmatized feminine are:

  • Subconscious Shadow Work

  • Sovereign Sexuality

  • Magick and Witchcraft

  • Necessary Destruction

  • Boundaries

  • Prioritizing Authentic Desires

  • Pleasure and Passion

  • The Unapologetic Crone

Why is the dark feminine so demonized?

The reason we repress our dark feminine is out of shame and/or fear.

  • We've been shamed for expressing our sexuality because it is our innate magnetism and power to create.

  • We've been shamed for honoring our authentic desires because others benefit when we are selflessly nurturing.

  • We've been shamed for setting personal boundaries because we are more easily controlled when we don't think we are worthy of having personal standards.

  • We've been taught to fear magick and mysticism because a person who realizes they have access to divine powers can challenge oppressive systems.

  • We've been taught to fear destruction because we of our ability to resurrect more equitable and just realities.

In all of these cases, our shame and fear benefits others. Particularity, toxic patriarchal systems. But the truth is, it's within the darkness where our true feminine power lies!

This isn't to say the light feminine is weak or less than! Rather, the dark feminine is a way for us to express the light feminine in a way that is empowering, versus manipulated for the benefit of others.


And of course, the light and dark feminine is a spectrum. The ultimate vision I hold is that one day they meld together to simply be "THE FEMININE" because we've stopped repressing natural dark aspects within ourselves!
